\ud83d\udcac Let\u2019s Keep Talking<\/a><\/li><\/ol><\/nav>\n\n\n\n\ud83d\udee0 What Does Fair and Consistent Really Mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Fairness in assessment means every student gets an equal shot… and it doesn\u2019t mean giving everyone the same assessment exactly<\/em> – because learners are unique and different humans. Fairness is about equity: same standards, same outcomes, but support that meets the learner where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\nConsistency means applying those standards the same way every time. Whether it\u2019s you, me, or Bob down the hall <\/em>assessing the unit, the judgment should be the same. Does it mean we are going to get it right every time? Of course not, but consistency reduces errors between students and provides a fairer outcome across this board. <\/p>\n\n\n\nBut Sammie – I hear you shout – <\/em>What does that actually look like?! <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nI got you! Here’s how consistency plays out in real life:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nA student with dyslexia gets a verbal version of the assessment – but the same competency is being judged… like an observation of the assessment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n A group of trainers validating each other\u2019s assessments to make sure one isn\u2019t marking too easy (or too harsh<\/strong><\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\nA new trainer using the same delivery tools and templates as their team, so every learner’s experience is aligned. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nConsistency. This is where RTOs shine – or stumble.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt can make or break the student experience – so let’s talk about what happens when RTO’s forget about consistency in their assessments… <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83d\udea8 What Happens When It Goes Wrong?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n I once worked with a student. He was smart, switched on, and eager to get into management logistics work. He passed all his units with some trainers (including me) on the business side, but when he moved over to the next set of units, the next trainer said his assessment work wasn\u2019t good enough.<\/em> He had to resubmit multiple assessments and began to question his skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\nHe felt defeated. He wasn\u2019t sure who to trust – was it the first trainer? Me? The last one? Was he actually competent?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nIt took weeks of meetings, re-assessment, and validation of marking to sort out. And the worst part? It wasn\u2019t even his fault. It was the system\u2019s<\/strong>. No one had standardised the marking tools between trainer teams. There was no random check of validity in the marking… <\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen assessments are inconsistent, students lose faith in the process and trainers burn out trying to fix issues after the fact. And then employers start questioning the value of our qualifications.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nWe can\u2019t let that happen. It will genuinely ruin our profession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fair and consistent assessment begins long<\/em> before the first student opens their workbook. It starts with the tools that we use. <\/p>\n\n\n\nIn case this is your first day, good assessment tools are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nMapped to the unit<\/strong>: They cover all the elements and performance criteria.<\/li>\n\n\n\nClear and simple<\/strong>: Students know what they\u2019re being asked. Trainers know how to mark.<\/li>\n\n\n\nValidated<\/strong>: That means someone else – ideally a few people<\/em> – have checked that the tool works before we use it in class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nValidation isn\u2019t just a once-a-year meeting either. Under the updated Standards for RTOs (2024), validation should be systematic and ongoing. And it\u2019s not just about ticking off a checklist. It\u2019s about asking: <\/p>\n\n\n\nIf I gave this task to three trainers, would they all agree the student is competent?<\/p>If the answer\u2019s no, the assessment tool needs work.<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\nIt’s really that simple. If the foundation of assessments are good, then it makes it easier for both the student and the teachers to maintain consistency. It all leads to quality outcomes in the workplace and brings our teams together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83d\udc65 Teamwork Makes the Marking Fairer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Assessments were never meant be a solo sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moderation, validation, team debriefs – these are the heartbeat of a really strong RTO. They help us stay on the same page, even when we have different teaching styles. Cuz ya girl is Neurospicy and sometimes that’s a challenge in itself…<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nLet me tell you about one RTO I worked with that did this brilliantly. Every Wednesday night, the really small gang held a debrief. Did I have the pleasure of enjoying tea and literal tea? Yes… you best believe we met up and chatted about class… bought up tricky assessments and compared prep notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWould you mark this \u2018satisfactory\u2019?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Does this answer show the skill, or just the knowledge?<\/li>\n\n\n\n How would you<\/em> give feedback on this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nWe weren\u2019t just trying to make assessments better – we were making each other better. And our students? They trusted the process. Because it was clearly working.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\ud83d\udce2 Communication Is Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n We can\u2019t have fair assessments without clear communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Students need to know what they\u2019re being assessed on, why it matters, and what success actually looks like. That\u2019s not just a box on a cover sheet – it\u2019s a conversation we need to have with our students for every assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trainers need to speak the same language, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If one trainer says a paragraph is enough and another says give me a full page, students get confused – and rightly frustrated<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSo let’s actually talk about marking guides – the communication tool we use to help us mark. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They\u2019re meant to help us be fair and consistent, but only if we actually use them – and keep them up to date. When we don’t, our students get stuck in the middle. They start wondering, Am I doing enough? What\u2019s the right answer here? <\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s not about making life hard for trainers – it\u2019s about giving our learners clear, steady expectations they can rely on. If we\u2019re all interpreting the same task differently, then we\u2019re not assessing the same thing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nThat\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to review marking guides regularly, especially when you are delivering multiple classes of the same unit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take the time to check in with your team before each unit is delivered: <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nAre we all on the same page?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Have the training package updates been reflected in our guidance? <\/li>\n\n\n\n Do the word counts, examples, and criteria still make sense for today\u2019s students? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nA well-maintained marking guide isn\u2019t just a compliance tick – it\u2019s a tool that builds confidence for both learners and assessors. Taking time to do a regular review keeps the marking guides accurate, useful, and fair. And let\u2019s be real – nothing saves time like a clear guide that everyone agrees on!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nConsistency comes from having clear benchmarks, examples of what good work looks like, and regular chats within the team. Simple, but powerful.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\ud83e\uddd1\u200d\u2696\ufe0f Feedback That Builds, Not Breaks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n A fair assessment is also about what comes after<\/em> the judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\nFeedback isn\u2019t just a sentence. It\u2019s a bridge between learning and improvement. And when we do it well, we help students grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I love some critical feedback – but I can’t do anything with negative feedback – and my students feel the same way. If you don’t like me as a person, there is very little I can do about that… but if my tone has offended you, then that’s something I can work on… <\/p>\n\n\n\n
But let’s actually talk about students and assessments… I once had a student who failed a roleplay style observation assessment… but instead of just saying you’re not competent, I sat with her and explained:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nWhat went well<\/li>\n\n\n\n Where she missed the mark<\/li>\n\n\n\n What to try next time<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nShe came back stronger the next night and passed with confidence. She utilised my feedback to support her team during her observation and that… that\u2019s <\/strong>the ripple effect of good feedback – it builds more than skills. It builds people up! <\/p>\n\n\n\n\ud83d\udd04 Updating and Reflecting (aka Keeping It Fresh)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n The VET world doesn\u2019t sit still – and neither should our assessments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Units get updated. Workplace practices and legislation changes. Student cohorts shift. Fair assessments need to reflect now<\/em>, not five years ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nHave you reviewed your assessments this year? And I mean… not just checked the cover sheets, but really looked at…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nIs this still industry-relevant?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Is this still the best way to test this skill?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Is this accessible to the current group of students?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nIf not, now\u2019s the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
And if your RTO isn\u2019t doing regular reviews, start the conversation<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\nBecause fair assessments today make competent graduates tomorrow – and that’s what VET is all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83e\udde0 Fair \u2260 Easy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n Sometimes when we talk about fairness, people assume it means being softer… making assessments easier… <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nope.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\nFair doesn\u2019t mean easy. It means clear<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\nIt means that every student knows exactly what they\u2019re being judged on and how they can succeed. It also means trainers apply the same rules and give every learner a real shot. Fairness. Equity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
We owe our students high standards and… genuinely… fairness is how we get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\ud83e\udded So, What Can We Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n If you\u2019re a trainer, here are a few questions you can ask yourself this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\nHave I validated my assessments with the team recently?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Do my students understand what competent looks like before they start?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Is my feedback helping my students improve – or just telling them the outcome?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Am I using the same standards as my colleagues?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nAnd if you\u2019re a manager or head of department…. just some brain-thoughts to consider: <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\nAre we giving trainers the time and tools to make assessments better?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Are we talking about assessment quality as a team – or leaving it to individuals?<\/li>\n\n\n\n Are our systems setting trainers up to succeed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\nFairness and consistency don\u2019t happen by accident. Trainers aren’t mind-readers and investing in training the trainers in consistency doesn’t just happen. Fairness and consistency happen when we choose<\/em> to make them a priority. It’s a choice that RTO’s make.
