The Impact of Technology on VET Education

Posted on July 23, 2025 by Sammie Coleman

*Or… more accurately… “Why My Classroom Is Starting to Look Like a Sci-Fi Movie… and I Love It”

Let’s take a moment and rewind to 2010. Back then, if you had a USB, a whiteboard marker, and access to a printer that wasn’t jammed, you were living the trainer dream. Fast forward to now though? We’ve got smartboards, flexible learning, learning management systems (LMS), AI-driven tools, online simulations, virtual classrooms, and more logins than anyone can actually remember. Seriously – when was the last time your work password was actually unique?

Technology has transformed the way we teach in Vocational Education and Training (VET) and it’s not slowing down. And yes, while it can be overwhelming at times – hello, “Your connection is unstable” during Zoom classes 👩‍💻 it’s also one of the most exciting things to happen to our sector since… well, competency-based assessments!

But – now I’ve got to be honest with you… New tools alone don’t make great training just happen. It’s how we use them that matters. So I think you should join me while we explore the ways technology is reshaping VET, how it’s helping (and occasionally hurting), and what it means for us as trainers – and more importantly, for our students.

💻 Learning Anywhere, Anytime

Gone are the days when learning only happened in a physical classroom between 9am and 3pm. The classroom has gone virtual and is really rather flexible.

Now, students can learn practically anywhere at anytime. Study on the train, during their lunch break, or from the comfort of their couch – even in their pyjamas – which this is a good reminder that there is no judgment here because ya girl here has absolutely delivered lessons in my jimmy jams!

Thanks to Learning Management Systems like Moodle and Canvas, our students can access videos, resources, quizzes, and assessments – all on-demand. There is no requirement to have rigid class attendance and it’s this flexibility that is game-changing for students juggling work, family, or unpredictable schedules.

In one of my classes, I had a single mum who worked evenings and could only attend classes at 10am – she often studied at 2am. There was no chance she was going to make it to the 6pm class time… Without tech, she wouldn’t have stood a chance. With it though? We recorded our weekly classes and she contributed effectively via teams. She asked questions & prompted discussions in our group that led to more of my students actually being engaged outside of class time… She not only completed the course, but graduated with confidence and a job offer. 🎉

This is what I mean when I confidently say that technology has broken down barriers and made VET more inclusive – and that’s something to celebrate.

🧠 Smarter, More Personalised Learning

Tech isn’t just about convenience though – it’s about smarter teaching.

With online quizzes and learning analytics, we can track student progress in real time. Who’s falling behind? Who needs extension work? Who’s smashing it but losing motivation? The data tells us.

It doesn’t even need to be boring. I use engaging game-based quizzes like Blooket and Kahoot to really get my students eager to come to class – and stick around until the end. Why? Because we play them at the start and end of the lesson.

Does that mean my students ditch out after 30 minutes? Nope. They choose to stay because the learning is adaptive… I help trainers to understand AI tools so they can effectively adjust content based on each student’s performance – personalising the journey and keeping learners engaged.

Even something simple like auto-marked quizzes can free up our time, so we can focus more on mentoring and supporting students one-on-one. Moodle does this very well – each student can complete a multiple choice quiz as part of their learning. Students who struggle to complete these are signalling they need some extra support…. Let me put that into context for you.

I once had a student who was too shy to ask for help in class. But our LMS showed she was repeating the same quiz over and over. That red flag allowed me to check in on teams, offer support, and guide her through – quietly and respectfully. She later told me, “You knew I was struggling before I even asked.” 💛 Well yeah girl – That’s the power of good tech.

🎮 Simulated Learning = Real-World Confidence

You can’t always bring a real workplace into a classroom – but thanks to simulation tools, you can get close. You can treat your classroom like the workplace and offer your students the same respect you would any of your employees.

From virtual hospitality scenarios to construction safety walk-throughs, simulations give students a safe space to practice, experiment, and make mistakes without real-world consequences.

And let’s be honest – they’re fun! Yes – even observations.

I once ran a business class where students had to work in teams to run a simulated company over six weeks, making real decisions with virtual money. The competition was fierce, the learning was deep, and the energy in the room was electric. Even the quiet students were fired up.

Simulations are especially powerful for students with limited work experience – they bridge the gap between theory and practice, helping students build confidence before stepping into the workplace. In the same breath – experienced students are excellent mentors for other students as they already know workplace ettiquitte and can explain the whys and hows of acting in the office. Like a Dungeons & Dragons game – but work related…

🤯 But… It’s Not All Sunshine and Wifi

Let’s pause for a moment and acknowledge: tech isn’t always easy.

Sometimes platforms crash. Sometimes logins don’t work. Sometimes you spend 45 minutes explaining how to upload a file and still get 14 emails saying, “It’s not letting me submit.”

As I type this, I’ve had teams crash on me every day this week. EVERY DAY!? Yes. My entire laptop has just randomly decided that this week is tech issues week. Screens have frozen. Calls randomly disconnected.

Tech equity is also a real concern. Not all students have access to reliable internet or up-to-date devices. And digital literacy isn’t a given – especially for students from non-traditional backgrounds or mature-age learners. Don’t assume everyone is connecting to the call on FTTP because it’s more likely they are connected via mobile data.

As trainers, we need to be patient. We need to meet students where they’re at. And we need to make sure that tech doesn’t become a barrier to learning – because that’s the exact opposite of what it’s meant to do.

I always build in “tech warm-up” sessions at the start of a course. We go through the platform together, click all the buttons, and ask all the “silly” questions (spoiler: they’re never silly). That early investment into digital literacy saves hours later – and gives students confidence that they can do this.

🧰 The Trainer Toolbox Is Expanding

Let’s be honest: most of us didn’t get into training because we love tech. We got into it because we love people. We love seeing students thrive and learn new things in their life. To expand their contribution to our society…

But now? Tech is part of every job. And the more comfortable we get with it, the more effective we become.

The good news? You don’t need to be a tech wizard. You just need to be open, curious, and willing to try (and then fail, and try again…) and probably fail a few more times.. It’s OK though.

Start small. Try a new tool each term. Ask your colleagues what’s working for them. Join a Facebook group. Watch YouTube tutorials. Make friends with your RTO’s eLearning team. Find a colleague who’s an extrovert and ask them to help you!

One of my biggest game-changers was switching from printed worksheets to interactive online ones. It felt scary at first (because like – what if it doesn’t work?!) but the payoff was worth it. Students were more engaged, I could give instant feedback, and no one ever lost their workbook again. Win-win–win!

🌟 It’s Still About People

Technology is changing VET in big, exciting ways. It’s making learning more flexible, more accessible, and more dynamic than ever before.

But here’s the thing: no matter how shiny the tech, it will never replace a passionate, supportive trainer who shows up with heart.

Our job isn’t just to press play on a video. It’s to guide, inspire, encourage, and connect. It’s to help students feel seen, valued, and capable – whether we’re face-to-face or on a screen.

So let’s keep learning. Let’s keep experimenting. Let’s use the tools – but never forget our biggest asset is still us.

💬 I’d love to hear from you!

What tech tools are you loving right now? What’s made your life easier — or trickier? Let’s swap ideas, celebrate wins, and keep the conversation going.

Because in this brave new tech-driven world, we’re all still learning – and we’re better when we learn together. 💛

Till next time.
